Description

The Carriage Works is a former carriage manufacturing building located at 104 Stokes Croft in Bristol, constructed in 1862 by architect E.W. Godwin. This building is notable for its squared, coursed Pennant rubble and Pennant and limestone ashlar dressings, and it is currently roofless. It features a rectangular plan and is designed in the Rundbogen style, standing three stories tall with a ten-window range. The structure has a battered rock-faced plinth, ashlar quoins, limestone bands, a cornice, and alternate voussoirs. The ground floor includes five wide semicircular segmental arches, with a 20th-century ashlar doorway in the center arch, which has two-leaf panelled doors. Above the arches, there are moulded sill bands on the first and second floors, with arcades of semicircular arches, a moulded impost band, and a hoodmould on the first floor. The outer arches are slightly pointed, topped with a corbel table and cornice. The interior of the building is largely gutted. Historically, the ground-floor arches were originally open to allow access for carriages made by John Perry and Sons, and the building once had a hipped pantile roof with small dormers, as illustrated in Winstone. This structure is recognized as a significant example of architectural style particular to Bristol.
