Description

A pair of attached cottages dating from around 1840. They are constructed of red Pennant ashlar with limestone dressings, brick ridge stacks, and a round-ended tile roof. The design is Picturesque Tudor Revival. The cottages are arranged over two storeys and have a four-window front. The asymmetrical front features a gable on the right-hand side, with a gabled porch supported by arch-braced posts leading to a Tudor-arched doorway for No.1. No.2’s entrance is one window in from the left, with a matching door. Tudor-arched windows, set within label moulds and with metal casements, are positioned either side of the door to No.2 and within the gable. To the left of No.1's door is a canted three-light ground-floor bay. The first floor has two eaves dormers with French windows that open onto narrow balconies featuring crossed, framed handrails. The gables have bargeboards, and the dormers and gables are decorated with carved animal and bird corbels. The interior has largely been remodelled with few original features. The cottages form a well-detailed group, notable for the unusual balconies and the use of Pennant ashlar.
