Description

Number 4 is an attached house dating from 1748, likely designed by Thomas Paty. It is constructed of brick with limestone dressings, a brick party wall, stacks and a pantile double-pile roof. The design is typical of the mid-Georgian style, with a double-depth plan. The building is three storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has a five-window front. The symmetrical facade features rusticated pilaster strips to a moulded coping and parapet, and rusticated quoins to the forward-projecting, pedimented central section. A mid-19th century porch of fluted columns on octagonal Pennant plinths with acanthus capitals, an entablature, and a dentil cornice shelters a two-panel door with roundels, margin lights and an overlight. The windows are 6/6-pane sashes with stepped voussoirs to their cambered heads; there are also three hipped dormers.

The interior displays a mid-19th century decorative scheme, featuring an entrance hall divided by a flat arch with guilloche and Greek key panels and cornices. Other details include doorways with cornices, two-panel doors, panelled shutters, and a mid-20th century staircase at the rear.

Attached to the front are mid-19th century cast-iron spike-headed railings with foliate decoration and capped piers. Dowry Square was laid out in 1720, with building continuing until 1750. The square originally featured a five-window middle house and outer three-window ones, constructed of brick and now largely altered and rendered with various designs.
