Description

Number 2 Dowry Square is a house dating to around 1780, located in the Hotwells area of Bristol. It is constructed of stucco with limestone dressings, featuring party wall stacks and a slate mansard roof. The house follows a double-depth plan and is built in a Late Georgian style, presenting a four-window range over three storeys, an attic, and a basement.

The front elevation is parapeted and incorporates a doorway on the right-hand side. The doorway has oval panels to the jambs and lintel, which is decorated with three thick reeds and corner roundels, surmounted by a thin reeded canopy. A six-panel door is fitted, with glazed panels above. The windows are horned 6/6-pane sashes, with taller first-floor windows featuring steel basket balconies. There are two dormers with 4/4-pane sashes. A marble panel above the door lintel is inscribed “SIR ROBERT YOUNG, SURGEON & c.” The interior of the building was not inspected at the time of listing.

Attached to the front are wrought-iron railings and a gate, with urn finials. A spear-headed design is applied to the area railings. Dowry Square was originally laid out in 1720, with building continuing until approximately 1750. The square featured a five-window middle house and outer three-window houses, originally built of brick and now mostly rendered and altered, with varying designs.
