Description
The former cart shed, stable, and stores at Underfall Yard was built in 1900 under the direction of Docks Engineer W W Squire. It is constructed from red Cattybrook brick laid in Flemish bond and features a slate roof.
The cartshed is located at the north-west corner of the Underfall Yard, next to the garden walls of 6 and 7 Avon Crescent, which are also listed at Grade II. The building has a rectangular plan and is oriented roughly east-west.
The exterior consists of a two-storey structure with a pitched roof, and the main elevation faces south towards the yard. On the ground floor, there are two wide openings that once served as the cartshed, separated by a cast iron column with a wide base that supports a metal lintel. These openings have been infilled with timber doors. To the right, there is a doorway leading to the former stable, accompanied by two small windows. Most openings feature segmental arched heads with rough brick arches, and the windows are multiple-light iron-framed casements. On the first floor, above the stable door, there is a taking-in door that has been converted into a window, along with two small windows similar to those on the ground floor. An external stair on the left leads up to the first floor, where there is a doorway flanked by a window on either side.
The interior has been subdivided and finished with modern materials.
