Description
Block K is a stable building from 1889, designed by John Girdlestone, who was the Engineer in Chief to the Docks Committee. It is located to the north of the Underfall Yard and forms part of its northern boundary. The building is rectangular and oriented roughly east-west, with modern extensions added to the south-west end.
The exterior features a two-storey structure, with the ground floor of the main south-facing elevation obscured by a timber outshut. On the right side of this elevation, there is a doorway and three windows that are believed to have served the former stable. These windows have segmental arched heads and rough brick arches, with cast iron multiple-pane windows. Above, there are three breather windows and an inserted opening. To the left, there is a wider doorway and a taking-in door above. The pitched roof includes louvred ventilation cupolas along the ridge. The east return elevation has a wide doorway on the ground floor and a window above it. The north elevation, which borders the gardens of Nova Scotia Place, is blind, while the west gable has been built upon.
Inside, the north wall of the ground floor retains rendered panels behind the stalls, along with some metal tethering rings. There is also a vehicle inspection pit at the west end.
