Description
Numbers 59 to 62 are a terrace of four houses, now used as offices, built around 1833 by Henry Rumley. The buildings are constructed of limestone ashlar with party wall stacks and a pantile roof. They are designed in a Neoclassical style and feature three storeys plus an attic, with a two-window range for each house. The regular terrace has doorways at both ends and paired doorways in the middle. The ground floor is banded and divided by panelled pilasters, with pilasters above that have carved anthemion capitals. There is a frieze, cornice, and a coped attic storey with a string course. The doorcases are adorned with fluted pilasters, entablatures, and cornices, and have rectangular overlights, some of which contain plate glass, along with two-panel doors. The ground-floor windows are set in shallow recessed surrounds, while the upper windows are plain, featuring 6/6-pane sashes and 3/3-pane sashes in the attic. The interior has been extensively refurbished and includes hall arches leading to dogleg winder stairs with stick balusters and column newels. The terrace also has attached front area railings with bud-headed designs and panelled piers. This building was constructed following the destruction of Queen Square during the 1831 Reform Bill riots.
