Description
Numbers 7 to 12 form a terrace of six houses built in 1784 on the east side of Brunswick Square in Bristol. They were possibly designed by William Paty. The houses are constructed of brick with limestone dressings, brick stacks, and a pantile mansard roof, and are representative of the mid-Georgian style. They are three storeys high, with a basement and attic, and have an 18-window front. The design is formal, featuring projecting four-storey end blocks, a first-floor plat band, and a modillion cornice. The doorcases have console pediments over keyed semicircular arches with plate-glass fanlights. Nos. 9 and 10 have paired doorways in the middle, positioned to flank Nos. 8 and 11. The end houses also have doorways in their side elevations. Each house has three windows per floor, with windows featuring five stepped voussoirs to sashes with margin bars, and two dormers. The taller end houses have pilasters above the cornice, between brick-arched windows. The end elevations feature Gibbs surrounds to the central, semicircular-arched doorways and windows. The interiors have largely been restored, resulting in a loss of many original features, with the exception of No. 12 which retains a large hall with a square, open-well staircase featuring ramped rails and a modillion cornice. No. 8 has a dogleg staircase with a curtail step, a ramped rail, a semicircular hall arch with fluted reveals, and six-panel shutters. Cast-iron railings are present to the open basement areas.
