Description
Clifton Wood House is a house built in 1721, with alterations made around 1800. It features a rendered exterior with limestone dressings, brick ridge stacks, and a hipped roof covered with pantiles. The house has a double-depth plan and is designed in the mid-Georgian style, standing three storeys high with an eight-window range.
The entrance is framed by two wide, full-height canted bows, with a single window extension to the left, topped with a moulded parapet coping. The doorway is notable for its fluted pilasters, entablature blocks, and a pediment, along with a rectangular timber fanlight and a six-panel door, flanked by 2/2-pane sash windows. The windows throughout the house have cambered heads and consist of 6/6-pane sashes, with the left-hand ground floor window being blind and the upper frames exposed.
At the rear, the elevation features a symmetrical three-window range, with the central section recessed and rusticated pilaster strips at the corners. There are semicircular-arched stair windows in the centre, with cambered heads on either side for the 6/6-pane sashes.
Inside, the house boasts a large fully-panelled entrance hall with a marble-flagged floor, divided by a keyed elliptical arch supported by attached fluted columns. The impressive rear open-well staircase has three twisted column-on-vase balusters per tread, with newels made of four columns leading to a wide curtail and moulded soffits. Additional interior features include shell head niches, doorways with raised broken pediments, six-panel doors, and panelled shutters.
