Description
Numbers 1 to 10, Tottenham Place, Clifton, is a terrace of ten houses built around 1840. The houses are constructed of stucco with limestone dressings, and feature party wall stacks. They are arranged in a double-depth plan and designed in a Classical style. The terrace is angled and irregular, with a moulded plat band, broad upper pilasters leading to a frieze and dentil cornice, and an attic storey with moulded coping. Numbers 1 to 3 angle back, number 4 projects forward with paired central pilasters, numbers 5 to 7 have plain upper floors, and the right-hand pair have recessed sections above the doorways.
The doorways of numbers 1 to 3 have panelled jambs, lintels, and overlights with margin panes; the left-hand doorway to number 4 has margin panes, and 6-panel doors are present at numbers 1 to 3. Numbers 5 to 7 feature plain door surrounds, while numbers 8 and 9 have wide, two-leaf doors with margin panes. Ground-floor windows have thin surrounds, first-floor windows have eared architraves, and second-floor windows are smaller with architraves. Numbers 4, 8, and 9 have tripartite first-floor windows with pilaster jambs and cornices. The windows are primarily 6/6-pane sashes, with 3/3-panes to the second floor and attic. The right-hand return displays a symmetrical three-window range designed to resemble two houses, featuring a rusticated section around the doorway and pilasters between the upper windows, with a door and overlights. The entrance to number 3 on the right return is accessed via a doorway with a moulded, semicircular arch, fanlight, and a 6-panel door. First-floor timber balconies have cast-iron brackets and moulded railings. The rear elevation includes segmental-arched stair lights.
Inside, the entrance hall is divided by an elliptical arch, leading to a rear stone, cantilevered open dogleg stair. This features cast-iron moulded balusters, a curtail and wreathed rail, modillion cornices with patera, 6-panel doors, and shutters. The attached cast-iron railings to the front basement area, front garden walls, and railings to numbers 3 and 5 have rounded coping and a cast-iron gate.
