Description
Redland Hill House, now a college, was built in 1761 by James Bridges. It features a rendered exterior with limestone dressings and brick lateral stacks, with the roof not visible. The house has a double-depth plan and is designed in the mid-Georgian style, standing three storeys tall with a basement and a seven-window range.
The left-hand wing includes a wide, canted full-height bay, a first-floor sill band, a bracketed cornice, and a parapet. To the right of this wing is a Venetian doorway that has interlacing glazing bars in the fanlight, pilasters flanking 4/4-pane sidelights, and an 8-panel door. The windows have keyed architraves and 6/6-pane sashes, with smaller sashes on the second floor. The rear elevation mirrors the front with Gibbs surrounds on the windows and a semicircular-arched stair light above the door.
Inside, the central stair hall features a rear open-well stair with column-on-vase balusters, a ramped rail, and a curtail. The stair light has panelled reveals, and the interior includes modillion cornices, wainscotting, and 6-panel doors with shutters.
The rear terrace is bordered by a coped and railed wall, with steps leading up to the doorway, which is adorned with wrought-iron railings and a curtail. The house was designed as a semi-detached pair, with a matching bay at the opposite end, making it a very rare design; however, the other end was demolished in 1933.
