Description
Two Pillars are a pair of gate piers that once served the now-lost house of Ashley Court, dating from the early to mid-18th century. Made of Bath Stone by an unknown mason, the tall piers stand approximately 6 meters high. They feature rusticated plinths and a smooth ashlar upper section capped with a decorative element. Later Victorian additions include the incised inscription of "ASHLEY COURT" and cartouche-bearing lions placed on top of the piers. The rear sides of the piers have arched semi-circular recesses. Historically, these gate piers are associated with a house owned by the Hooke family in the mid-18th century. The site was redeveloped into suburban housing in the mid-19th century, leaving these impressive piers as remnants of the former elaborate garden layout of the house.
