Description
Throop House is a neo-classical villa built around 1800, featuring two lofty storeys and constructed from pale greyish-yellow brick. The entrance front, facing east, has four windows that are straight-headed with intact glazing bars in the sashes. A porch supported by fluted Greek Doric columns features a Greek key frieze. The building has a simple cornice made of two projecting brick courses and a hipped slate roof with tile ridges that are recessed behind a parapet. There are two chimneys at the south end and one at the north end, with two of the chimneys having old square panelled pots. The fifth bay to the north is recessed and likely added later. The south end is painted brick. The rear, facing west, has a narrow central bay in the main block, creating a total of five bays. The property is set in a well-preserved romantic landscape, with lawns and cedar trees that slope down to the river. Throop House, along with the cob wall and stables, forms a cohesive group.
