Description

A stable block, dating from around 1805 and designed by John Nash, now converted into a house. It is constructed of stucco with a slate hipped roof and a leaded dome to a weatherboarded cupola. The building has a single-depth plan arranged around a U-shaped courtyard, enclosed by walls. It is two storeys high with single-storey wings and has a four-window facade. The main part of the house features a pedimented porch with paired columns leading to a double door entrance. The ground floor has windows with cambered heads, a French window on the left, and two six-over-six pane sash windows on the right. The first floor has three-over-three pane sash windows. A full-width first-floor balcony is supported by slender iron stanchions. The wings project on either side and return forwards, each featuring round-arched carriage openings. The ends of the wings are connected by a tall curved brick wall with a central round carriage archway, detailed with imposts and a coped flat top. The rear of the building has round-arched ground-floor windows with casements. The interior has been altered as part of the conversion. The building contributes to the group value of Merley House.
