Description

This drinking fountain and cattle trough, dating from around 1900, is located on a traffic island north of Fountain Roundabout. It features a pink granite cattle trough supported by stone end blocks, each with heart-shaped niches. Below the main trough, there are three smaller troughs for cats and dogs, which are hollowed out from the plinth. At the west end, a short round column of the drinking fountain rises from a square base. The basin has an inscription commemorating Samuel Bemister, who served as Mayor of Christchurch seven times. The fountain and trough were relocated to their current position around 1994.
