Description
The Former Watch and Clock Fusee Chain Factory, built in 1845 by William Hart, is a significant historical building located on the south-west side of Bargates. It was used for manufacturing watch and clock chains until 1899 and is part of Christchurch, which was a major center for this industry, also involving the workhouse and domestic production.
The factory is constructed of red brick with grey headers and features a slate roof. It is two storeys high. The north-east or entrance facade includes a plaque in the gable end, two windows, and vehicle doors below. The north-west side elevation has seven bays separated by brick pilasters. Above the windows, which are mostly three-light designs, there are slate hoods, with the ground floor windows featuring cambered arches. All windows have glazing bars. The south-west end facade is rendered.
This building, along with The Priory Garage and Nos 22 and 24, forms a group of structures, with The Priory Garage being noted as a building of local interest.
