Description

The Broadstone Park War Memorial, built in 1921 and designed by Gilbert Bayes, is a Portland stone monument commemorating the First World War. The memorial features a sculpture of a winged female figure in a mourning pose, her face turned downwards, holding a wreath draped with flags. She stands on a column rising from a plinth with carved laurel swags at each corner. Finely detailed bas-relief carvings on the west and east sides depict men and officers of the Army, Navy, and the Flying Corps, while the north side features shields. An inscription around the top of the plinth reads, "TO THE MEMORY OF / THE OFFICERS AND MEN / OF BROADSTONE DISTRICT." The south face of the plinth bears the inscription "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE / 1914-1919" alongside a roll of honour listing those who lost their lives. A bronze plate attached to the base of the plinth commemorates the dead of the Second World War, and is inscribed "1939-1945 / KILLED ON ACTIVE SERVICE (NAMES) / KILLED BY ENEMY ACTION (NAMES)." The memorial was dedicated on June 10, 1920, with further inscriptions added after the Second World War. It stands as a powerful reminder of the impact of the world wars on the local community and is recognised for its distinct architectural quality and craftsmanship, as well as the prominence of its designer, Gilbert Bayes.
