Description

This is a two-storey, asymmetrical house of a T-plan, situated next to the road and part of the Old Water Works complex. The house dates to the 18th century and features a half-hipped slate roof with an ornamental tile ridge. The windows are segment-headed, and there is a flat-roofed extension to one side. The building is listed for both its industrial qualities and its historical significance. From 1900 to 1913, it was occupied by Russian emigrés led by Count Vladimir Tchertkoff, who established the Free Age Press there. This press was instrumental in publishing many of Leo Tolstoy's later works, which had been banned in Russia. The house is part of a group with the adjacent pumping station.
