Description

This is a terrace of five houses built around 1840, possibly designed by Sir Charles Barry Jnr. The houses are made of buff brick with terracotta decorations, featuring ridge stacks and a tiled roof with fishscale tiles, all in a picturesque Tudor Revival style. The terrace has a single-depth plan and consists of a single storey with an attic, arranged in a six-bay range.

The design is symmetrical, with the end pairs of houses featuring outer doorways that are 4-centre-arched. Nos. 20 and 18 have rustic timber gabled porches, while the central house is double-fronted. The windows include 3- and 2-light designs with labels and 3-centre-arched metal lattice casements, along with 2-light gabled dormers, with the middle pair being smaller. Each house has large stacks on square bases, each with four diagonally set shafts.

Each house displays a plaque with Gothic numbers, ranging from 45 to 49, which is part of a sequence for the estate houses of the Wimborne estate. No. 16 has a mid-20th century brick extension and a window that was inserted into the former doorway. The terrace forms a symmetrical arrangement and has group value with the similar facing terrace at Nos. 15-19, which influenced the design of 19th-century housing on the Canford estate.
