Description
The Lodge of Canford School is a house and gateway built around 1850, designed by Charles Barry. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings, featuring a brick ridge stack and a tiled roof, all in the Tudor Revival style. The building has a single-depth plan with a one-room south extension and is a single storey with an attic, comprising a three-bay range.
The main feature is a tall moulded two-centre carriage arch set in a tall gable, which includes an oval panel displaying the Canford Arms and is flanked by shallow buttresses. The roll-top gable coping extends to the right-hand gabled half dormer and the end gables, which are topped with ogee gable finials. The ground floor has paired two-centre-arched windows with label moulds, while the dormer features a small arched window, and there is a similar paired window in the right-hand end gable.
To the left, there is a three-stage tower with a square base, diagonal buttresses, slit windows, and an octagonal belfry that has open cusped lights and a leaded ogee domed roof. A large stack with an ashlar base and a four-sided shaft is also present. The rear elevation is similar and includes a mid-20th century extension. The interior has not been inspected. This lodge serves as the main entrance gateway to Canford House, now Canford School, and was remodelled by Barry for the Guest family, forming part of a larger group of similarly styled estate houses. Originally, the lodge was one room wide but has since been extended to the south.
