Description

No. 4 Market Close is a former house now serving as a masonic lodge. The building features an early 18th-century rear section and a late 18th-century front, with a late 19th-century entrance. The front is constructed of header bond brickwork with stucco dressings and has a steep tiled roof. It has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall with a four-window range.

The right-hand side has a late 19th-century single-storey entrance bay that is set back and includes a cornice and balustrade. Steps lead up to a keyed doorway with a panelled door and flanking sidelights. The main front displays an English bond plinth, a stucco cornice, and a parapet. The right-hand windows are slightly apart and feature flat gauged brick arches over 6/6-pane sashes. The early 18th-century rear section has an eaves cornice and a steeply pitched roof.

Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to include ornately carved mahogany panelling in the dining room, which is reputed to have been donated by Lord Wimborne from an estate in Spain. The front ground floor room features a decorated terracotta chimney piece adorned with Masonic symbols, and the temple on the first floor is also panelled, containing ornate regalia and symbols. There was a former entrance in the right-hand ground-floor window.
