Description

Winton Public Library is an Edwardian classical public building constructed in 1907-1908 by architects H E Hawker and Mitchell. It is a more elaborate version of the Springbourne library. The library features a symmetrical facade made of red brick and stone, with an entrance accessed via curved steps. Above the entrance is a coat-of-arms set in a segmental pediment, flanked by Ionic pilasters that support obelisks. The gables on either side have diamond patterning in the stone apex and large lunette windows with stone mullions and transoms, consisting of three lights over five lights. The gables are supported by flat brick buttresses that are banded in stone. The roof is slate, topped with a white timber louvred cupola that has battered sides, a low leaded dome, an ornamental finial, and a weathervane. The flanks of the building feature three tall windows that extend up as dormers, with flat-headed windows on the south side and semi-circular windows with leaded roofs on the north side. The windows have moulded stone sills and timber cornices, and the lights are leaded. The asymmetrical single-storey rear has hipped roofs arranged in echelon and a tall chimney with vertical panels. Inside, there is a barrel-roofed hall behind each gable, although the interior has been modernised.
