Description
The Thatched House, now a public house, was formerly a villa known as The Shrubberies. This well-preserved and attractive cottage ornee dates from around 1820. It features white plaster walls and a hipped thatched roof with a scalloped pattern. The building has a symmetrical front, is two storeys high, and is three windows wide. A trellised wooden porch with decorative patterning and a tent-shaped roof leads to the entrance, which has a fanlight above a half-wheel window type door. The casement windows have diamond lattice glazing, with trefoiled lights in the glazing bars on the ground floor and intersecting ogees in the glazing bars on the first floor. The windows on the north and south sides have a glazing pattern of alternating horizontals. There is a lean-to verandah at the south side and a lower, two-storey rear addition at the north along Brook Road, which also has a hipped thatch roof.
