Description
The Bournemouth Natural Science Society is a well-preserved polychrome villa built around 1865. It has two storeys and a basement, featuring a mixed architectural style. The building is constructed of buff brick on a grey brick plinth, with red brick bands and bright red brick lintels and voussoirs. The windows are round-arched, segmental, or flat-headed, and are grouped in combinations of 2, 3, 4, or 5. A prominent three-storey corner tower has a pyramid tiled roof, a cast-iron finial, and a flanking chimney. Above the tower, there is a timber cornice over a row of small straight-headed attic windows, with brick panelling in the 'belfry' area. A timber porch with heavily chamfered openwork framing and balustrading leads up steps against the tower, topped with a half hipped roof. The lower eastern wing extends to a two-storey gable, while the garden front features a rectangular bay window. There is also a lecture hall to the south-east, designed in a similar style but built in 1920.
