Description
This is a chimney stack located approximately 23 metres north of Pulteney Gardens Bridge, built around 1840. It is made of limestone ashlar and is thought to be an ornamental feature of a former pumping station that may have served the nearby canal locks. The chimney is a tall square column constructed from finely dressed Bath stone, featuring four plain pilasters evenly spaced around the shaft. It has a high moulded base and scroll brackets at both the lower and upper ends, with the upper brackets supporting a moulded capping. At the top, there is a tall urn with a wide rim, surrounded by four smaller brackets. The base of the chimney is partly hidden by a corrugated iron shed. The design of this Italianate shaft suggests it was built in 1840 and is likely associated with a pumping station meant to return water to the upper flight of the canal.
