Description

KENNET and AVON CANAL 656-1/0/0 (West side) Chimney approx. 23 metres North of Pulteney Gardens Bridge (Formerly Listed as: KENNET AND AVON CANAL Chimney (approx 70 yards north of Pulteney Gardens Bridge)) 11/08/72

GV II

Chimneystack. c1840. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar. Purpose uncertain but thought to be ornamental chimneystack of former pumping station (possibly underground) serving nearby canal locks. Tall square column in finely dressed Bath stone with four plain pilasters spaced equidistantly around shaft, to high moulded base, and with scroll brackets at lower and upper ends, latter supporting moulded capping which surmounted by four smaller brackets round tall `urn' with wide rim. Base partly concealed by corrugated iron shed. HISTORY: Stylistically this Italianate shaft seems to date from 1840 and is probably related to a pumping station intended to return water to the upper flight of the canal. SOURCES: [Bath Evening Chronicle, 21 Nov 1958, letter].
