Description

No. 1 and attached railings is a house, dating from around 1775 to 1789, and later altered in the 20th century. It is located on Belvedere Place and Morford Street. The front to Morford Street is limestone ashlar, with rubble to the basement and ashlar to the entrance front on Lansdown Road. The roof is a double pile, parapeted mansard, hipped to the right, covered in Welsh slate, with a coped party wall to the left and two ashlar stacks, some with early clay pots.

The building is three storeys, with an attic and basement, and has a single bay front with three windows facing Morford Street. The first floor has a Venetian window with plate glass sashes in plain reveals, a bold keystone to the centre light and a continuous stone sill with a wrought iron balconette. The second floor has three grouped windows, narrower to the left and right, with a six/six sash in the centre, flanked by eight-pane fixed lights, all in plain reveals with continuous stone sills. The ground floor has a plate glass sash to the left and a single light casement to the right, both in plain reveals with stone sills; the casement has a small timber hood on brackets. Blocked basement windows and a blocked doorway are visible under a crossover. Double dormers feature plate glass horned sashes. A plinth and a band course over the ground floor are present along with a moulded eaves cornice. The entrance front on Lansdown Road has two six/six horned sashes with stone sills, and a similar blind window to the centre; the second floor has similar sashes and a blind window, and the ground floor has two sashes flanking a six-panel door with flush moulded and fielded panels, in a plain reveal with a 20th-century hood. A single dormer is present. A band course over the ground floor and a moulded eaves cornice lead to a coped parapet continued from the Morford Street front. The rear elevation includes six/six sashes to the first floor with horns, a plate glass sash to a single dormer, and 20th-century alterations to the basement.

The interior has been altered during conversion to flats. Attached wrought iron railings and a gate, with shaped heads on limestone bases, are also part of the property. The building is listed for its group value.
