Description

This is an early 18th-century chest tomb located about 5 metres north of the north aisle of the Church of St. Andrew in Chew Magna. It is made of limestone and features a flat top with a moulded edge and a moulded base. The tomb has rounded oval ends, with a garland of bay leaves on the west side and a design on the east side that includes a crossed pick and shovel, crossed bones, a central skull, an hourglass, and rosettes. The north and south sides have two recessed panels with pilasters on the sides and in the centre, which are adorned with carved flowers. The cornice and plain frieze complete the design. The inscriptions on the tomb have worn away over time.
