Description
Welton Manor House, dated 1620, has been altered and modernised, with 19th-century additions to the rear. The building is constructed of rubble with ashlar quoins and features a modern concrete tile roof at the front, while the rear has old pantiles. It is two storeys high and has a central tower porch with a round-headed entrance that includes moulded surrounds and imposts, as well as a guilloche band around the extrados and sides of the opening. Above the entrance is a flat moulded cornice on moulded stone brackets, enclosing a narrow rectangular panel with raised letters that read "ANNO DOMINI 1620."
On the first floor, there is a round-headed window with fixed light and glazing bars in a moulded surround. Each floor has two windows on either side of the porch, featuring three-light glazing bar casements with stone mullions, which appear to be modern replicas in enlarged openings. The building has coped verges with modern chimneys. The south return includes a two-light mullion window and a later glazed door, while the north gable features a three-light mullioned stair window, possibly a 19th-century replica.
To the southeast, there is a two-storey wing with three later sash windows, and on the ground floor, an original three-light stone mullion casement with a rectangular drip-mould. The rear has two gabled 19th-century additions and two original windows in a two-storey catslide extension, which have leaded casements, three lights, and moulded stone mullions.
Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase with a ramped rail. The first-floor southwest room boasts a highly unusual fireplace, featuring a fluted frieze and a high corniced mantel, with supporting figures that have masks in socles below—an uncommon Renaissance detail. An achievement of arms is displayed above the fireplace. The origin of this detail is untraceable but is likely connected to Richard Mogg, who built the Manor House at Farrington Gurney, as noted in the Parliamentary Survey of 1650.
