Description

Old Welton Farmhouse is a building that consists of two parts, dating from the early 18th century and the late 18th century, with considerable alterations and additions. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features a modern pantile roof with three brick chimneys. The building has ashlar quoins, a plinth, and a coved eaved cornice.

The north front of the farmhouse is two storeys high, with one window on each floor. These windows were formerly glazing bar sashes and are framed by moulded architraves with a pulvinated frieze and a moulded flat cornice above. To the right, there is a studded door with moulded jambs and a lintel, topped by a segmental stone hood supported by cut stone brackets. There is a catslide extension to the right of the door, which includes one original architrave window on the return and later windows on the front of a gabled stair turret. This turret features a two-light mullion window with ovolo mouldings on the west side.

The garden front of the farmhouse is three storeys tall, with two windows on each floor. The windows are two-light with square mullions and edge-roll type, framed by moulded architraves on the ground and first floors, and are larger openings. The second floor has two-light ovolo mullion windows, with the left window lacking a mullion. To the right, there is a fine stone shell hood doorway with ovolo jambs and a hood supported by acanthus leaf enriched folded scroll brackets, leading to a studded door. A straight joint is visible to the left.

To the south-east, there is a lower two-storey extension that features a range of two-light mullion windows of the edge-roll type to the right of centre, along with a blocked doorway to the right. At the rear of this wing, the first floor has a two-light and a three-light window, while the ground floor below includes a three-light window and a two-light window next to a doorway, both with chamfered reveals.

Inside, the ground floor room in the south-west has a bolection moulded corner fireplace, and both the ground and first floors feature an 1830s grate. There is also some panelling in the eastern half of the building.
