Description
The bridge to the pool, located approximately 50 meters north of the Church of St Paul, is an ornamental structure dating from around 1740 to 1750, possibly designed by Richard Jones. It is constructed from limestone ashlar. The bridge features a low central segmental arch made of alternating vermiculated voussoirs, topped with a moulded closed pediment and a tympanum that is also vermiculated. On either side of the arch, there are shallow quadrants with lower ashlar walls that lead to wide piers or walls. These sections originally included small arches with vermiculated voussoirs and weathered copings, although most of the copings were missing at the time of inspection in September 1994. The outer convex face of the bridge is simply finished in ashlar, which shows significant wear. In front of the bridge, there is a roughly circular basin with an ashlar wall that has a plain, uncoped top at grass level, along with a central fountain. Excavations taking place during the inspection revealed three small semicircular basins behind three arches, which are remnants of the former serpentine lake that flowed west from the bridge, as well as some straight ashlar walling that likely belonged to an earlier, more formal canal associated with the bridge.
