Description
Middlesex House, including the garden wall and gate to the road, is a house dated "J F (John Fisher) 1670" on the frieze of the porch. It is constructed of coursed rubble with freestone dressings and features a slate roof with coped raised verges. The house has a large central ashlar stack, which was formerly fitted with diagonal chimneys. It is two storeys high with attics and has three steep coped gables. The façade consists of three bays and a porch. The windows are glazing bar sash types set in plain stone surrounds, with one window blocked on the right side, and there are keyed oval windows in the apex of the gables. A continuous string course runs over the ground and first floors. The projecting gabled two-storey porch has an eared architrave surround to the outer doorcase, with an inscription on the frieze. The inner door is a plank studded type with an ovolo moulded surround and a depressed four-centred arch lintel. The boundary wall to the road is made of rubble and features a mid-19th century Gothic doorcase, complete with a stone slate hood that has a false machicolation and a Perpendicular style door with cusped heads.
