Description
The gate piers and boundary walls at Locksbrook Cemetery were designed by the architects Hickes and Isaac. Constructed from Pennant Stone with Bath Stone dressings, the front gates are made of ornamental cast iron and are hung on octagonal stone piers that rest on square bases. Each pier features a cusped gablet on each face and smaller upper sections with moulded capitals, topped with wrought and cast iron finials that have pendulous stems. There is a low wall on either side of the gates, which has gabled coping and regularly spaced piers that are embellished with gabled fronts and sides. The original iron railings have been removed. The cemetery, initially opened as the Walcot Cemetery, covers twelve acres of elevated land to the north-west of the city and was laid out by Mr. Milner, who is also known for designing the grounds at Crystal Palace in South London. The removal of the railings likely occurred during the Second World War due to salvage efforts.
