Description
Cloisters Cottage, located on the south side of The Cloisters, is a detached house that was originally part of a stable wing. It dates from the early 19th century and has undergone alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of rubble with some limestone ashlar and features a slate roof.
The exterior consists of a long, shallow two-storey range, with a wider section at the inner end. It has varied fenestration, predominantly featuring casement windows. Just inside the gateway, there is a near continuous range of three-light casements above two wide elliptical arches that lead to paired plank stable doors. To the left, there is a later lean-to porch and one eaves stack. Beyond this, there is a stepped forward unit with a flat roof, which has a strip of casements and a range of two two-light windows above a recessed glazed door.
The end gable facing the garden is made of ashlar and features a stone bellcote on the coped gable, topped with small obelisk finials. The gable facing the road has similar finials, with a larger one at the ridge. The long outer face of the building has a series of casements and an added balcony. The interior has been partially inspected and consists of late 20th-century conversion work. This building served as the stable block for the adjoining Cloisters and Southside.
