Description

Woodbine Cottage is a detached house dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the late 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from painted limestone ashlar and features a slate roof. The building has a complex three-part plan, which includes a hipped narrow range on the left, a gable facing the road, a broad hipped central section with an entrance and staircase, and a narrow end bay on the right with a canted outer end.

The front facing the road has three small lights to the left, a large twelve-pane sash window, and an original six-panel door with a transom light, all sheltered by a flat stone hood supported by pilasters and deep consoles. The set-back end bay features a small oculus at ground level, and its three splayed faces have blind lights. This section has a broad mid band that wraps around the bay, where the name "WOODBINE COTTAGE" is incised in bold Roman lettering, along with a cornice that includes a blocking course and parapet.

On the left return, there are two closely set plain sash windows above the doorway and various additions. The garden front, which faces north, is set to a narrow terrace. At the left end, there are paired lights at each level, with French casements on the ground floor, a stair light with coloured glass, and two plain sashes above the French casement with a transom light. The main sections of the house have high-hipped roofs, with a large stack in the valley between them and an additional stack at the outer end of the canted bay.

The interior, which was only inspected on the ground floor, retains a tight well stick-baluster staircase with a wreathed handrail, panelled doors, and fine panelled shutters on some windows.
