Description

Temple County Primary School, built around 1860, is a notable example of mid-Victorian scholastic architecture. The building is constructed from squared and coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, copings, and gabled single-Roman tile roofs. It has a roughly L-shaped plan, comprising a schoolroom range to the north and a schoolmaster’s house range to the east.

The schoolroom range is a low, single-story building with a gable end featuring a coped parapet and saddle stones. It contains a large five-light window with cusped heads, set in echelon under a relieving arch. A second gable end features similar details. Three gablets rise into the main roof, each with a mullioned and transomed window of four and three lights, respectively, with shouldered heads. The entrance is located in the angle of the ranges, featuring a part-glazed door and a gabled porch with a pointed-arched doorway and a plank door.

The schoolmaster's house consists of two gabled elements, one set back from the other, both with coped parapets and saddle stones. The west facade has two- and three-light flat-headed mullioned windows with relieving arches. A canted bay is present on the ground floor to the left, and a doorway with a lean-to tiled roof and plank door is on the right. The south return wall includes two half-dormers, two windows, and a doorway. The interior of the building has not been inspected. The school demonstrates an unaltered and distinguished approach to scholastic architecture of the mid-19th century.
