Description

Nos. 1-4 New Street West are four terrace houses with shops, built around 1830 and later altered in the 20th century. The buildings are rendered with painted ashlar dressings and have a roof covered in slate or double Roman tiles, or concrete tiles. The terrace is stepped and runs at an angle away to the west, with No. 1 attached to the south side of Rosewell House.

The exterior features three storeys and an attic, with each house having two bays. All windows are plain sashes set in raised platband surrounds, with swept heads and feet, and there are sill bands and brackets at the second floor, as well as sills on brackets for pairs of windows at the first floor. The upper sill band sweeps down at each party division. No. 1 has a moulded cornice with a blocking course and parapet, a mansard roof with concrete tiles, and a small two-light dormer. It also features a full-width 20th-century shopfront with an entrance to the right and a stack at the rear. The very narrow rear has a large sash window above the doorway.

Nos. 2 and 3 have low-pitched slate roofs and a 19th-century pilaster shopfront, with a door to the right for No. 3 and a wide elliptical arch in a channelled stone surround with a keystone for No. 2. The rear of these houses has plain sashes and a large stack at the coped party division. No. 4 has a steep roof covered in double Roman tiles, a tall plain sash dormer, and a brick stack to the right, along with a 20th-century shopfront. The rear features various additions and plain sashes, including a sash dormer.

These houses represent a modest but important survival in an area that has experienced significant loss due to war damage.
