Description

Northfield House is a detached house dating to approximately 1820, with 20th-century additions. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof, hipped in form and featuring stacks to the sides of the central block. The building has a double-depth plan, possibly resulting from remodelling and enlargement of the central portion, with a projecting right wing. The south-facing, garden front has seven windows and features a coped parapet, cornice, and frieze. A canted bay is situated at the left-hand corner and extends to the left return. The right wing, likely dating to the late 19th century, has tripartite French windows with overlights to the first floor, opening onto a balustraded balcony that is positioned above a single-storey canted bay with matching windows. Plate glass windows are present elsewhere. A balustraded stone balcony, supported by four pairs of fluted Doric columns, extends across three first-floor windows to the left of the bay. French windows with overlights are positioned directly under the balcony. The entablature continues around the returns of the building. The left return has a two-bay, full-height canted bay featuring plate glass sash windows and a Doric porch leading to French windows. The right return, facing Richmond Hill, has two tripartite windows on the first floor that rise vertically to a central point, with margin panes above two 20th-century doors. To the right is a metal grille covering a plate glass sash window. To the left, a two-pane sash window sits above the street wall, with a roofline connecting to the main house forming a shallow range, which includes a 20th-century leaded window. The interior has not been inspected. Northfield House represents an unusually large late Georgian villa, designed to take advantage of the views from its location.
