Description

York Place is a detached villa built in the early 19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, with the roof not visible. The building has a double depth plan and features a two-storey wing.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a basement, with a two-window front facing the road and a four-window front facing the garden. The street front projects forward to the left and includes a single window on each floor, a plat band, a cornice, and a parapet. The windows are six-over-six pane tripartite windows. In front of the recessed right-hand bay, there is an enclosed porch that has a coped parapet, cornice, and frieze. This porch is stepped forward over engaged Tuscan columns and encloses a mid-19th century four-panel door, with a small circular window above it. There is a single tripartite window on the second floor. The coped parapet rises to the right to meet the higher parapet of the south garden front, with the cornice stopping to the right and returning to the left.

The two left-hand bays of the four-window south garden front step forward and feature a small octagonal stack at the left-hand corner. Taller tripartite windows, likely stair windows, break through the plat bands on the right. The interior has not been inspected.

This villa is notably tall and takes advantage of its prominent hilltop location on the northern edge of the city.
