Description
This is a 17th-century chest tomb located about 6 metres north of the north aisle of the Church of St. Andrew in Chew Magna. It is made of limestone and features a heavy flat top with a moulded edge and a moulded base. On the north and south sides, there are two panels each containing two round-arched recesses that create an arcade. These are flanked by central and side pilasters designed as tapered balusters with fluted capitals. Similar recesses are found on the east and west sides, adorned with carved chevrons and matching pilasters. The cornice is broken forward over the pilasters, and the frieze includes rosettes, although most of these details are now worn away. The inscriptions on the tomb have also worn away over time.
