Description

Cemetery entrance and lodge built between 1861 and 1862, likely designed by C.E. Davis, who also created the nearby Cemetery Chapels. The structure is made of limestone ashlar with tile roofs. It features a triple pointed archway, with the central arch designed for carriages, and a compact lodge in the shape of a Greek cross topped with a steep pyramidal roof, all in a 14th-century Gothic style.

The gateway has a raised central gable with shouldered sides, extending to the right into a small square store with a flat roof. Moulded arches with a drip course are supported by paired octagonal shafts with capitals, and these mouldings continue as a cornice to the blocking course on either side, returning as a string to the lodge. The central area has a transverse barrel vault, while the pedestrian arches have flat ceilings. The original embellished iron gates remain, with runners for the central pair. The small store has rectangular lights at the front and back.

The lodge is two storeys high, projecting as an octagonal bay with a steep hipped roof facing the street. It features a segmental pointed light in an oriel with a stone roof on brackets, and small lights on the splay faces at the ground floor. Other elevations have a face gablet. To the left, the boundary wall slopes down to cover a lean-to unit behind, and there are two octagonal ashlar stacks with heavy cappings, along with a central oriel at the front. The side facing the gateways has a plank door with strap hinges under the left archway, accessed by two steps and beneath a moulded pointed arch, with rectangular lights to the right at both levels. Small windows are generally set in sunk surrounds, featuring half-height nook shafts and deep moulded sills, all flush with the wall. The interior has not been inspected. This building is a striking entry point to the paired chapels within the cemetery.
