Description
Nos. 13 and 13A, Chatham Row are a pair of late 18th-century terrace houses, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed of limestone ashlar and have double-pitched pantile roofs with moulded stacks to the right party wall. The houses are double depth and stepped downhill to the right.
The exterior features three storeys, attics, and basements. The stepped coped parapets and stopped cornices are notable, as are the vertical joints marking the division between the two houses, along with the platbands and plinths. No. 13A has a two-window front with six-over-six pane sash windows and a six-panel door with a tall, multi-pane overlight. No. 13 has plate glass sashes in tripartite windows on the upper floors. A six-panel door is set back on the left side of the ground floor, and a 19th-century two-over-two pane sash window sits to the right of centre. A six-over-six pane sash window is situated on the left return, visible on both upper floors.
The interior of No. 13 was inspected in 1981 and retains an original “Tudor-style” fireplace and dresser in the basement, as noted in a valuation report from 1990. The front room has an original marble fireplace and original mouldings, though the doors throughout are 20th-century replacements.
