Description
No. 31, located at the rear of Nos. 120 and 122 on Walcot Street, is a house dating from around 1765. It is constructed of painted limestone ashlar, with the roof not visible. The building has a double depth plan and features two storeys and a basement at the front, while the rear has three storeys. The front has a two-window layout, with a coped parapet, cornice, and a first-floor platband that returns to the right. The windows are six-over-six pane sash, and there are small square plate glass windows to the right of the door and at the far left. A cornice is located above the six-panel door to the right. The rear of the building has splayed reveals for the ground floor window and 20th-century double doors to the left. Although the interior was not inspected, the front displays a fully Palladian elevation, which is typically found in more prominent street locations, rather than being tucked away down a passage as it is here. Historical maps indicate that this house was originally part of a row connecting Chatham Row and Gibbs's Court and that it initially faced Walcot Street before being obscured by later infilling of the forecourt.
