Description

124 and 126 Walcot Street are a pair of shops with accommodation above, built around 1880, featuring a 18th-century wing at the rear and 20th-century additions. The buildings are constructed from limestone ashlar and have a hipped pantile roof. They have a double depth plan with a long rear addition.

The exterior presents a symmetrical appearance with two storeys and Venetian windows on the first floor, which are set between pilasters. A coped parapet and cornice step over the pilasters at the center and sides, creating slightly recessed panels with curved upper corners on each upper floor. The plate glass sashes of the Venetian windows have stone mullions with paterae on the friezes. No. 124, located on the right, features a moulded semicircle above the central light. The pilasters extend to the ground floor, where they have Composite capitals that support a cornice and fascia, with blocks at the centers and plinths. Similar pilasters flank the former doors and shop windows, totaling six in all.

At the rear right of the building, there is a blocked mid-18th-century single entrance bay with engaged Doric columns that support a heavy lintel. Above this entrance, at the first floor level, is a shouldered architrave surrounding a blind window, with a square blind window above it within an architrave. A 20th-century attic storey window is also present. The rear features a returned cornice, a sill to a blocked second-floor window, a first-floor platband, a cornice to a former first-floor window, and a 20th-century window and door at the ground floor.

The interiors have been much altered and the building currently operates as a toy shop. Historically, these buildings were occupied by the Bath Cold Storage and Ice Company until the mid-1970s, with the ground floor used for meat storage. No. 126 was listed on 5th August 1975.
