Description

The dry arch or portal to a tunnel under the A36 was built in 1834 for the Black Dog Turnpike Trust. Constructed from ashlar, the west portal features a tall Gothic style, pointed arch composed of three orders with a hollow-step-hollow moulding and is topped with a hoodmould. It is flanked by abutment walls. The design was inspired by the west door of the Chapter House of Hinton Priory.
