Description

The building is the refectory located to the west of the Chapter House, likely part of the Carthusian Hinton Priory, which was founded in 1232. It is constructed of rubble with freestone dressings and has a 20th-century tiled roof with coped raised verges. The rectangular structure has two storeys, with the upper storey featuring a 19th-century king-post roof and accessed by an external stair at the north-east end.

On the north elevation, there is a central blocked four-centre headed doorway alongside an adjoining chamfered arched doorway. The east elevation contains two blocked outer doorways; the right one has a wide four-centred head, while the left one features fragments of a Caernarvon arch, with a central pointed doorway. The south elevation has a stringcourse above the ground floor supported by projecting corbels below. There is a Caernarvon arch doorway on the west side, with a square chamfered window to the left and a two-light window with four-centred heads at the east end. Additionally, there are three later buttresses.

Inside, the undercroft has quadripartite vaults with chamfered ribs. The eastern part is divided by octagonal piers, with the vaults springing from moulded octagonal caps and corbels. The western part is set transversely without piers, and two capitals retain stiff-leaf stems. A fireplace is set in the west wall, featuring a heavy hood on moulded jambs with caps. The building is scheduled as an Ancient Monument, listed as Avon County No. 107.
