Description

A terrace of ten houses located on the north side of Beaufort West, originally set back from London Road. The terrace dates to the early 19th century and is shown on a map of 1819, though it may relate to an earlier development of circa 1796. The terrace is likely designed by John Eveleigh. The houses are constructed from limestone ashlar to the front facades, with rubblestone to the rear, and have double-pitched slate roofs with four chimney stacks. The plan is double depth, with rear rooms slightly uphill and small rear additions. Staircases are located to the left, at the rear of the houses.

The terrace is three storeys high and has basements. Each house has a two-window front, with the end houses and two central houses projecting slightly, featuring semicircular-headed windows on the first floor. A continuous parapet and cornice runs along the top, with a moulded sill stringcourse to the second floor and a sill band to the first floor. The ground floor features banded rustication with incised voussoirs. The windows are six/six pane sashes, with trellised balconies to the first floor. The front doors are six-panelled, with roundels to the central panels and decorative glazing to the overlights based on interlacing circles. The entrance to No. 17, on the right return, has a wider door set within a semicircular recess, over a cobweb fanlight.

The interiors have not been inspected, but are reported to have panelled shutters (recorded for Nos. 8, 9, and 16 by the Bath Preservation Trust). Original plasterwork, joinery, and staircases remain in situ.
