Description

The Island House is a house located in Midsomer Norton, dating from the early to mid-18th century, with extensions added in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has been converted into offices.

The building is constructed from coursed and dressed red sandstone rubble, featuring limestone elements such as ashlar quoins, a plain band at the first-floor level, and a coved eaves cornice. It has a slate roof and three chimneys, although only one is original and all have been significantly altered.

The house has a double-pile plan, with a two-storey extension to the north from the 19th century and a single-storey extension to the south from the 20th century. It stands two and a half storeys tall with an M-shaped roof and a gable-lit attic. The original 18th-century section has three windows across its front; the outer windows are paired and feature plain architrave surrounds with a central mullion. The first floor has a Venetian window with a keystone in the center. All sash windows in this part of the building have thick glazing bars. Below the Venetian window, there is a modern central door framed by an architrave and topped with a moulded flat hood supported by cut stone brackets.

The interior of the house has been significantly altered and modernized. The front boundary wall is also listed separately at Grade II.
