Description

Dundas Aqueduct is an aqueduct that carries the Kennet and Avon Canal over the River Avon, built around 1805 by John Rennie. It is constructed from ashlar stone in a monumental classical style, featuring a rusticated arch over the river framed by paired giant pilasters. There are elliptical flanking arches with battered curved plain ashlar revetments, each revetment having a pilaster on either side. The structure is topped with a monumental Doric cornice that includes a triglyph frieze, with the cornice breaking forward over the pilasters. On either side of the frieze above the main arch, there are bronze plaques in raised frames, added in 1828, which are said to contain inscriptions honoring Charles Dundas M.P., chairman of the canal company, and John Thomas, the chief engineer. The top parapet is pierced with balusters above the revetment walls. The aqueduct is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
