Description
Corston War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Grade II-listed Church of All Saints, near the church’s north aisle and tower. Made of Bath stone, the memorial stands approximately 2.3 meters tall and features a medieval-style lantern-cross with a canopied top adorned with ornate crocketed finials. Each side of the lantern is carved in relief with scenes from the life of Christ, including the Crucifixion. The lantern is mounted on an octagonal column that rises from a chamfered, square plinth, which is set on a square step. Flower vessels are positioned on the step next to the north and south sides of the plinth.
A copper plaque on the front of the plinth bears the main dedication: "IN MEMORY OF THE BRAVE MEN OF CORSTON/ WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919/ (NAMES)/ “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS.”" A second plaque on the rear of the plinth commemorates those who died in the 1939-1945 War, stating: "THESE ALSO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE 1939-1945 WAR/ (NAMES)/ “WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.”"
