Description
The Haverfield Monument is a pedimented chest tomb located approximately 4 meters southeast of the entrance gates to the Church of St Thomas on Church Street in Widcombe. It commemorates the Rev. William Haverfield, who died in 1822, his wife Elisabeth, who died in 1828, and their eldest son, Lieutenant Colonel William Haverfield, who died in 1850.
This chest tomb is made of Bath Stone and is raised on a low plinth with plain sides. It features a pointed pediment above a simple cornice with fillet and ovolo moulding. The north side honors the Rev. Haverfield and his wife with a plain applied panel that includes a carved arrangement of books and a radiant chalice at the center of the pediment. The north side also commemorates their son William with a plain raised plaque made of white marble. Above this plaque, there are carved martial devices, including a flag, hat, and sword, within the pediment.
